Attacking Padel: Mastering the Smash, Vibora and Net Play

Defense keeps you in the point, but attack is how you win it. In padel, points are won at the net, and the players who control the net win matches. This is the companion to our defensive guide: how to take the net, build pressure, and finish the point.

If your defense is solid (see our defensive padel and wall play guide), this is how you turn it into points.

Take and hold the net

The team at the net dictates the point. Move up together after a good lob or a deep return, stay side by side, and cover the middle. From the net you volley down into your opponents' feet and force weak replies. Losing the net means going back on defense, so protect it.

The bandeja: your net-holding shot

The bandeja is the most important attacking shot in padel. It is a controlled overhead, hit with slice, that keeps the ball deep and lets you stay at the net rather than smashing and retreating. Master the bandeja and you hold the net all day.

The vibora: aggressive and awkward

The vibora is a faster, more aggressive cousin of the bandeja, hit with sidespin so it skids and kicks off the side glass. Use it to pressure opponents and open the court. Learn both in our padel shots guide.

The smash: finishing the point

  • Flat smash: raw power straight through the middle when you get a short lob.

  • Por tres / por cuatro: the spectacular finishes that send the ball out of the court off the back glass. High risk, high reward.

Pick the smash only when the ball sits up nicely. Otherwise, the bandeja keeps you in control.

When to attack

Attack when you have taken the net and forced a short or high ball. Do not force it from defense: reset with a lob, move up, and wait for the ball that lets you finish. Patience then aggression is the winning pattern.

Train it with a coach

Attacking shots are technical, so feedback speeds everything up. Sharpen your overheads and net play with padel coaching in Dubai, and combine it with smart doubles strategy.

FAQ

What is the most important attacking shot in padel? The bandeja. It lets you stay at the net and keep control, which matters more than raw power from the smash.

When should I smash? Only when you get a short, high ball at the net. If the ball is deep or low, play a bandeja and hold your position instead.

How do I win the net? Move up together after a good lob or deep shot, stay side by side, cover the middle, and volley into your opponents' feet.
